Mole Removal Surgery

Mole removal surgery is an operation in which suspicious lesions such as moles, sunspots, and hemangiomas, or the ones that are not suspicious but desired to be removed due to cosmetic reasons are removed with a small cut. All of the removed lesions are pathologically examined.

What makes the moles dangerous?

The moles start appearing on the body in childhood and continue to develop up until the person reaches their 30s. As the person grows, the moles may change color or disappear completely.

However, since certain changes may hint at malignant lesions, it is important to be mindful of them. If you observe deformation, asymmetry, rapid growth, swelling, itching, bleeding, scabbing, irregularity at the sides, multiple colors, or a change in color on your moles, you should see a dermatologist for an expert opinion.

How is the mole removal surgery performed?

In mole removal surgery, the skin is cut with a scalpel. The mole and the surrounding healthy skin are removed and sent for a pathological examination. It is performed under sterile conditions in the clinic. Before the operation, the area containing the mole is numbed with an anesthetic injection. Then, the area is cut with a scalpel to remove the mole. Following the removal, the incision is stitched and dressed to ensure that it heals well.

Is mole removal surgery a painful procedure?

Before the operation, the area containing the mole to be removed is completely numbed with an anesthetic injection. Hence, it is a completely painless process apart from the pain caused by the anesthetic injection.

What should be considered after a mole removal surgery?

After the operation, the patient must make sure that the stitched area does not contact with water. If taking a bath is truly needed, the patient can use waterproof bandages that can be obtained from pharmacies. After 3 days, the dressing is removed, and an antibiotic cream is applied to the area daily. The cream is used 1-2 times a day until the stitches are removed. If the operated part is in a less hygienic area of the body or an area contacting water often, the dressing may not be removed. Usually, the stitches are removed 7-10 days after the operation; however, it depends on the operated area.

Is mole removal surgery a dangerous procedure?

Like all medical operations, this procedure has certain potential risks as well, including bleeding, wound site infection, scars, allergic reactions to the anesthetic substance, or pain in the operated area. However, all of these occur very rarely. Therefore, if there is a suspicious situation, these possible risks should not constitute an impediment to the mole removal surgery.

Does the disease spread once the mole is removed?

If the mole removal surgery is done by the right people and with the right methods, the disease does not spread even if the removed part is a cancerous mole. On the contrary, if the operation is performed correctly, the treatment of the disease starts since the suspicious mole is completely removed during the surgery. Thus, if your doctor advises a skin biopsy, please undergo the surgery without fear and delay.

Does the mole removal surgery leave a scar?

In surgical operations requiring the skin to be cut and stitched, the skin cannot look like what it was after the healing process. Yet, most of the time, the cut is around 1-1.5 centimeters long. Therefore, the size of the scar will be at the most, unless you have a risky genetic structure. In most cases, the biopsy scar looks indiscernible normal 1 year after the operation.

When do the pathological examination results come out?

Generally, pathological examinations of the skin biopsies result in 7-10 days. If risky elements are found during the pathological examination, it may take up to 3 weeks for the process to conclude since the biopsy requires further examination.
