Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

The upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both eyelids can be operated on during cosmetic eyelid surgery. The most common reason patients prefer this surgery is to enhance the undesired physical appearance caused by aging. This surgery aims to decrease the sad, tired, sleep-deprived, angry, and unhappy look caused by aging and give the patient a softer, happier, more rested, and lively expression.

Where is the incision made in cosmetic eyelid surgery? Is it performed under general anesthesia?

Cosmetic eyelid surgery can be performed under both local and general anesthesia. It can be performed either from the inside (transconjunctival) or the outside of the eyelids (transcutaneous).

During the surgery, sagging excess skin is removed and the skin is tightened. The goal is to decrease the number of layers and wrinkles. The thin muscle layer under the eyelids can be removed, suspended, or tightened during the operation. Aging causes the fat pads situated inside the eyelids to get herniated. During blepharoplasty operations, these fat pads are treated as well.

How long does the operation take? Does it require hospitalization?

The operation takes 30 minutes to 2 hours on average; however, this varies from patient to patient. Usually, hospitalization is not necessary.
