It is often performed under local anesthesia; however, it is possible to do it under general anesthesia as well.

How long does the operation take? Does it require hospitalization?

The operation takes 30 minutes to 1 hour on average; however, this varies from patient to patient. If it is performed under local anesthesia, there is no need for hospitalization.
